Pours enormously thick, jet black, like crude oil. Viscosity must be very high. Almost no carbonation at all, just a modest tan lace ring emerges on the top.
The scent is exceptionally appealing: molten dark chocolate ganache, bags of cacao nibs, syrup, caramel, a bit of maple syrup, a suggestion of vanilla, lactose, oat flakes and a dash of graham cracker. There's also a dry fruity segment that contains dried plum and raisin. If this is not a liquid dessert, nothing is a liquid dessert! Superseductive!
The taste profile is vast but also portrays its barrel side that remains overshadowed by other nuances in the scent. But now, I would actually start my list of components with raisin, red wine, soaked oak barrel, both dried and fresh purple plum, maybe also a wisp of date. Interestingly, I can also spot relatively generous sweet licorice and lactose. Molten dark chocolate with an impressive proportion of natural cacao nibs, vanilla and a creamy touch play their tricks also for the tastebuds. The maltbase obviously boasts with black, chocolate, caramel and cookie malts plus oat flakes. No single hint of roastiness can, though, be detected. This is a pure bliss and a liquid dessert. Complexity is quite applaudable.
The body can't be classified as anything else but huge. Anything smaller would be a disgrace to the ABV. Yes! The finish is, first and foremost, licoricey but the dark chocolatey flavors don't really disappear anywhere either. They are the first signs in the end. Later, the red wine and barrel notes raise their head.
The mouthfeel is full, actually truly robust, extraordinarily thick, viscous and oily. It's definitely lip-glueing, even sappy in a good way. Desserty, for sure, with deep, rich, complex and somewhat layered characteristics. Supervelvety.
A big beer and slow sipper. Fares favorably with OHB at the world class level.
