Vleteren ist eine ländliche Gemeinde in der belgischen Provinz Westflandern. Und das dortige Imperial Stout ist ein 10%er schwarz wie eine Teergrube. Feiner, karamellbeiger, hoher Schaum türmt äußerst beständig darüber. Die Nase wird wohlig verwöhnt mit Rumtopf, Kaffee, Schwarztee und einen Hauch Tabak. Auch der Antrunk folgt dieser aromatisch dichten Mixtur in Perfektion und mit einem weichen, likörig wärmenden Mundgefühl. Im Hintergrund ist ein minimales Prickeln zu erhaschen, während sich Kaffee, Dörrobst, getreidige Anklänge, Tee bis Tabak einander umkreisen und den Gaumen umgarnen. Süße Momente, hier und da durch Kaffeebittere abgefedert, Tiefe der Aromen, rund und schmeichelhaft dargeboten. Mit einem guten Imperial Stout habe ich hier gerechnet - dieser perfekte Genuss ist mir jedoch überraschend die volle Punktzahl wert.

Nelivuotias, uusintaan melkein kuuden vuoden tauon jälkeen. Hyvää mausteisuutta, hiivaa, makeaa portia ja kuivia hedelmiä. Kuplia reilusti, mutta pehemät maut. Kovin on imelä vaan, sokeri ja hunaja puskevat pintaan. Muuten erinomainen.

Ihan kohtuullinen versio Westvleterenin 12:sta, vaikka ei toki ylläkään alkuperäisen tasolle. Tuhti, maltainen ja mausteinen olut. Väri on hyvin tummanruskea, läpi näkyy hiukan valoa vasten. Vaahtoaa kaadettaessa maltillisesti, jopa vähemmän kuin odotin. Tuoksu on tuhdin maltainen ja mausteinen, piparkakkumaista aromia havaittavissa. Makeutta ei ole liikaa vaan kokonaisuus on tasapainossa. Maku on samaa osastoa, maltainen ja suklainen, mutta ei kuitenkaan ylimakea. Alkoholi tuntuu maussa portviinimäisenä teränä. Jälkimaussa tulee esiin hiukan katkeroakin, mutta vain hetkeksi. Loppumaku on lämmittävä ja hiukan sokerinen.

Basically translucent, very deep dark chestnut brown beer. Long-lived although otherwise obedient carbonation. A dense moussy head, looks like natural vanilla cream and climbs initially two fingers high. Exceptionally long retention. The scent is relatively restrained: I can find roasted malt, rye flour, Portwine and a suggestion of cacao nibs. The gustatory universe is composed of more flavors, such as dark chocolate, cacao nibs, purple plum, Portwine, vanilla, a bit of syrup and brown sugar. The level of sweetness is a bit exaggerated, yet, this is not a pastry type of beer of any kind. The body is full. The end is syrupy, chocolatey and brown-sugary. The mouthfeel is full, seriously lip-glueing, almost sticky, deep and slightly warming. But not alcoholic despite being barrel aged.

Sauna warming beer. Not sure if a Belgian Strong Dark Ale serves this purpose well but here we go. Looks relatively opaque. Maybe it's transparent because of the color or maybe it is, indeed, hazy. Anyway, the hue is dark brown. The introverted carbonation creates an off-white velvety lacing that retreats soon to the sides. Caramel, sweet dark malt, raw cacao powder and a sigh of dark plum constitute the olfactory provision. Let me sip. Tastes even a couple of decimals sweeter than what the fragrance suggests. Dark malt, yes. Sweet-leaning, for sure. Caramel, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, cookie and dark plum peel follow right on its footsteps. A marginal alcoholic tang looms in the shadows. The body is medium-full. The end doesn't change the trajectory from the beginning. The sensation is medium-full, a tad deep, lip-glueing but later also drying. I mean in the aftertaste. Modestly alcoholic. Belgiany — sort of. Delivers.
