Again, a nightcap. Gosh, this renovation is killing me. Very long days, too little time for beers. But now a quadruple. I deserve it. I believe I do. And that's all that matters. Murky, deep dark brown beer fills my glass. The carbonation is slightly on an extroverted side. A silky, latte-hued head grows two fingers tall and descends gradually to a neat lace ring on the surface. Syrup, cacao nibs, plum, raisin, brownie, a bit of date. The scent is very soft and seductive. Follows beautifully my expectations. The tongue enjoys the diverse flavors of plum, raisin, date, cacao nibs, syrup and caramel. And a remote twist of alcohol. Brownie, too. And a newcomer: a hint of licorice. A lovely cocktail! The body is medium to medium-full. I expected bigger. I thought first that this is the weakest link of the beer but having checked the ABV (= 9.5 %), my incipient disappointment fades away. Well satisfactory for the strength. The diverse gustatory components carry over to the end in varying degrees, some stronger, some are left halfway. Licorice intensifies. We’re rascals and scoundrels, we’re villains and knaves; drink up me ‘earties, yo ho; we’re devils and black sheep, we’re really bad eggs; drink up me, Grutte Pier, yo ho. The mouthfeel is medium-full, lip-glueing, soft, gentle, smooth and a tad frothy. It's even marginally complex. If not a masterpiece, at least a decent sipper that does the job.
