Another Boulevard that Ryan found for us to Duo. This brewery is a definite bucket list destination. Another chance to use my Boulevard glass.
Modest head, orange copper clear color. Aroma is very sweet with hints of cake icing. Texture is medium thin while maintaining a soft feel. I immediately get a sweet carrot cake icing, the carrot cake itself, some ginger and a touch of cinnamon. Damn, they nailed it. Again. The alcohol which is 12.2% is hidden. This is one of my favorite styles of beer, a dessert beer. But it's a strong ale. That's new. As it moves into the finish I experience a transition. A malt heavy flavor that maintains the carrot cake but allows the oak barrel characteristic and the 12.2% alcohol to rise to the front. The oak barrel is not influenced by any previous alcohol or charring. They must have used a fresh oak barrel, which enables the other flavors to remain undeterred. No hiding the 12.2% alcohol now as it warms from the mouth to the stomach.
As I have said many times before, Boulevard Brewing is truly impressive. No doubt that they're dedicated to producing a quality product. They have really succeeded with this one.
