Another Boulevard beer Duo with Ryan and family. First time using his Christmas gift, a Boulevard glass for each of us. We love that Brewery.
What an aroma just from the bottle. Sweet confectionery sugar quality along with a hit of alcohol. Almost no head as it enters the glass. Ryan nails the aroma. It's pure Carnation evaporated milk from the can. Can't describe it if you've never had it, just that it's very sweet with plenty of lactose. Also has hints of liqueur. First ship relays an extremely smooth and gentle texture, somewhat heavy but not sticky or syrupy. Has a heavy crispness to it. The evaporated milk hits you first and it's powerful in it's sweetness. The addition of expresso coffee and just a hint of dark chocolate instantly transforms this into a possible 5.0. The middle arrives quickly with a barrel aged earthiness and alcohol traits that seems to exceed the 11% alcohol. With the third sip the battle is over, this is 5.0. The smoothness, well balanced, wonderful flavors have won me over.
Ryan and I have had many wonderful stouts from different breweries that always seem to have a superior basic Stout recipe they used for adding additional flavors. We are familiar with Boulevard. This one seems different. However they create most of their stouts, we think they did something different this time. And it's fabulous. Hope to have a few more with this unique blend.
