Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

Got home from the Back Forty Brewery fireworks just in time to watch the New Year's celebration on TV. Haven't had this Stout in over 3 years so it's time to try it again.
Super high and frothy head. Sweet malt aroma. Flavor gives me a roasted deep coffee with only some background bitter chocolate hiding behind. As it enters the finish the sweetness gives way to a surprising hop bitterness. Good way to bring in the New Year.

Pours a dark brown. Even while coming out of the can it's opaque brown. Small head with large bubbles that disappears quickly. Aroma of sweet roasted coffee, adds faint notes of chocolate. Full-bodied but not syrupy or sticky, still feels velvety but clean. A flavorful bittersweet cocoa up front slowly becoming more bitter then adding roasted coffee and a brief elusive alcohol burn. Not until the finish does the sugar start making the chocolate creamier and gives it more of the characteristics of a milk chocolate.
Not a lot of surprises and the coffee is very subdued, but still there's no negatives about it. A nice enjoyable solid beer.

Another stout on football Saturday in my son's man cave / theater room. He has a great stout line up waiting, hope I survive.
Opaque brown color. Faint chocolate aroma. Texture is not as creamy as you would expect from a milk stout, more of a crisp and clean feel. Abundant dark roasted coffee and bitter chocolate predominate the pallet. A bit of a bread flavor appears before a flat salty finish. A small amount of alcohol burn compliments the finish.
