So excited! Ryan's diet has prevented us from having our normal amount of Duo beers. Tonight we are going to have a 14.2 % imperial stout from Texas. These Martin House, 2 beers to a box series are normally pretty good.
Poured into the snifter glass with very little head, not many bubbles coming to the surface. Absolutely no light is shining through this. Strong aroma of whiskey and maple. A heavy soft texture while not being syrupy, still coats the inside of the glass with a tan ring. The first taste I get is a deep heavy sharp coffee. Then a natural raw maple sets in. This is followed quickly by sweet caramel. Each adds to the flavor while not replacing the previous. Last to join is the whiskey alcohol with its mouth warming and nasal tingling. All these flavors calm down as it travels into the finish while adding a mild peppery kick to end it all.
With all these excellent ingredients, it's still somehow misses the mark. A little too sweet, alcohol doesn't seem so strong, coffee was not in its description, where did the Maple come from, and it seemed a little flat. Ryan and I agree that it seems like it was rushed, needing some small adjustments to make it really good. A good beer, yes, but fell short of what it could have been.
