I brought back several Boulevard limited release beers from when I was in Texas. Ryan and I love these and we're going to Duo one tonight.
Black as midnight out of the bottle with no head. Seriously, no head. Swirl it in the glass and it leaves a heavy brown film on the inside. Powerful alcohol aroma, no distinction as to what kind. Chocolate and dark fruit present. First impression of the flavor is super sweet, boozy, and deep roasted. Alcohol content of 12% seems low as this warmed all the way to the belly. Dark fruit seems like a dark cherry liqueur with some prune in the background, but all that's a guess. Origin of the super sweetness is masked. No masking the deep dark chocolate flavor. Even has a little dark chocolate bitterness. As the beer warms all these flavors shift. The dark fruit disappears. The dark chocolate turns into a milk chocolate. A distinctive toasted caramel arrives. The finish turns dry. This is total chaos in a glass.
I like this beer but it's way too heavy. It really is motor oil. I think this heavy viscosity causes confusion with the flavors. After Ryan and I bounce around a lot of ideas, I still don't know what I just drank. Still giving it a 4.7
