Having a Boulevard Imperial Porter as a Duo with my daughter and son-in-law. His A& M Aggies and my Crimson Tide had good games today. Boulevard has always been good to us.
Seems like a very heavy liquid coming out of the bottle. Almost no head, only a swirl of bubbles. Aroma is awesome. Brandy Barrel alcohol is straightforward with coffee and a whiff of chocolate. A very soft and creamy texture, some effervescence then emerged. Flavor.. is complex, and wonderful. I had to take multiple sips as it was constantly showing new flavors in combination. First I get the sweet oak barrel Brandy flavor, a tart cherry or ripe raisin. It's followed by cinnamon, coffee and dark chocolate. Astounding that all these flavors compliment each other and are not dueling for dominance. The balance is amazing. As it warms, the flavors remain while the creaminess increases. The finish adds a new dimension. The warmth of the alcohol makes its presence known, in a very pleasing and refined manner. It develops a dark chocolate that brings a small amount of bitterness with it. The heaviness of the beer creates a longevity to the finish and turns even more chocolate late.
Ryan and I both agreed while Duoing that this was a high four rating. As we discussed it, and continued to taste the complex flavors, our appreciation escalated. In the end we both agreed that, once again, Boulevard scores a five. It's uniqueness as an exceedingly powerful and creamy Porter along with the totally balanced and diverse flavors made this an exceptional beer. Highly recommend it.
