Hemmola Raw Series: I (Barrel Aged 2020)
6.0% Saison / Farmhouse Ale
Wort is collected straight from the sparged mash of legendary Pohjoisen Jรคttilรคinen by Kosoolan Panimo. There was no boil and we let it chill without a lid in a warm spring night of Pappilankorpi. Later we added house mixed culture yeast to speed up the fermentation.
The rawest version was served in festivals in summer 2020.
After that is has been aged in wine barrel for more than two years.

This beer ends my 2023. Dry January is about to begin. The ABV โค 1.0 % will be the criterion for the next month. Last year, I had a nice set of non-alc beers from OnderNulPuntVijf webshop. It proved successful. I'm now actually looking forward to the Dry January with another set of non-alc delicacies.
Okay, still the final beer. It is a barrel aged raw ale. Vintage 2020. Raw ale is a brew whose wort hasn't been boiled. Brewing a raw ale is something medieval. Sahti is actually a raw ale in this sense but this beer is not a Sahti. It's something else. A historical beerstyle. Strange like an alien.
I'm trying hard to get to the beer itself. Alright. Now. It pours relatively cloudy, deep copper with a vermilion glaze. Carbonation is really restrained, just like a raw ale is supposed to portray. A thin lacing forms on the top and then dies completely.
The scent is attractive: funky sour fruity. Is this a Lambic? Whaaat?? I'm getting sour apple, gooseberry and cranberry, seasoned with colossal white wine and deep barrel notes. Wheat malt works nicely in the basement. The yeasty side is interesting: like a wild yeast of spontaneous fermentation but at the same time I'm picking a hint of lactobacillus. Mama! This is unique!!
Damn, let me taste this. Pleeeease! Yeah. Sour! Big time. Hefty white wine, massive oak barrel nuances, sour winter apple, raw gooseberry, plum, damson, cranberry, rowanberry, wheat malt, wild yeast. Quite a list! Do I also spot a tiny dollop of Port? Awesome. I love the layers and nuances here. ๐งก๐งก
The body is medium to medium-full. Even that gives me creeps, the ABV isn't more than 6 %. The finish is considerably sour with several of the previous components. Wine reduces intensity though. Everything I say be raw; the aftertaste''s hardbody, everything else I say be raw.
The mouthfeel is medium, tart, puckering, deep and intense. Layered. It's strongly vinous, funky, Belgiany, faintly woody as well as barrel aged. Intriguing!! Astonishing! A Finnish Lambic.

And finally: Never forgive. Never forget.
