Hints of toffee and dark cocoa, and a balancing hop bite bring this rich ale full circle

Last night in Texas, trying a few beers before we go.
Dark brown, opaque, modest head that's thin but lasts. Flavor has roasted, earthy malt, molasses and a dried dark fruit, maybe dates. The ending has a more intense roast, close to char, turns dry and develops a black pepper burn.
The sweet molasses roasted with the malt created a bark or woodsy taste. Different but not appealing.
