Been holding on to this Boulevard beer for a long time. It's from 2021 and these limited release beers have always been excellent.
Remove the cap and immediately smells the alcohol. Also some ripe raisin. Seems heavy coming out of the bottle, short head that dissipates. So dark it's almost black. Aroma from the snifter glass releases even more alcohol, they're not trying to hide that 13.7%. Still getting raisin even though they don't advertise it. That first sip again confirms that I love the stouts from this brewery. Mouthfeel is a very heavy and creamy sensation. Alcohol warms the throat, a strong dark chocolate combines with a trace of vanilla. No raisin is evident now. It was probably the whiskey barrel. Not much change going into the finish except the chocolate slowly drifts into cocoa. As I continue to take sips, the alcohol is increasingly affecting the back of my throat. Perhaps four years in the bottle has increased the percentage.
Boulevard again hits a home run. This is a decadent dessert beer, my favorite kind. Not complicated, it's consistent and well balanced from first to last. Full of flavor and the high alcohol is not offensive. Whiskey barrel aging seems to appeal to me more than the Bourbon barrels and this one is excellent. I think I should start stocking up on all of these limited release stouts from Boulevard.
