A special Duo event, Ryan is rating his 2,000th review. Congratulations! 🎇🥈Our first side by side comparisons. Both from Prairie Artisan Ales. Basic Betty and Basic Rebecca. Going to be fun. We have done Basic Betty, now let's go to Basic Rebecca.
Head is much darker and smaller but it also disappeared quickly. Nose from the bottle was strong Bourbon barrel alcohol and spice. Didn't pick up on any pumpkin yet. Texture is heavy, not sticky but it is syrupy. Both soft and creamy. Leaves an even coat when swirled in the glass. Flavor definitely throws the bourbon barrel at you. Very bozsy from the onset. Immediately engulfed with warm winter spices. Unlike Becky, none of the spices individualized themselves. Just a very calming and warming winter spice. A dark malt is the base for this, but doesn't dominate. The sweetness doesn't come from anything added but from the bourbon barrel itself. As the finish begins there is no development or evolution. Only the warm spice and an equally warming bourbon alcohol.
Overall, this is a very basic beer. Not complicated, smooth, even, elegant from first through the finish. Mature. Still, Where's the pumpkin?
As this is the second beer in the side by side, this is where comparisons arrive. Prairie named these beers perfectly. Becky is young and immature, flavors abundant and all over the place. Rebecca, more mature, gave a more even and eloquent product. I much preferred Rebecca. The barrel aging, simple and consistent flavor, confident in what it is, made this by far my favorite. Would have received a 5.0 except, where's the pumpkin?
