Congratulations to Ryan on his 1900th review. He picked a Boulevard Brewing beer because every one we've had lately have been fantastic. This is another Brewer's Choice limited edition and it's a barrel aged barley wine at 13.3%.
Came out of the bottle into the glass with a short creamy head. Deep red amber color, clear. Aroma! Wow! Sweet toasted caramel, a slight nasal burn from alcohol, and a crusty custard. That's just from the aroma. First sip: soft, smooth, creamy texture. An abundance of wonderful flavors. Brown sugar, toasted caramel, pie crust, custard, sweet dark red wine and some gentle (13.3%?) oaky bourbon. All of it perfectly balanced and somehow comes together brilliantly. Even that 13.3% alcohol isn't commandeering the overall experience. As the beer warms, nothing changes. Doesn't develop, doesn't evolve, doesn't mature. It is what it is, and that's great.
I am an aroma lover. Truly enjoy a beer with a powerful and delicious aroma in the glass. This is the first beer I've had that started battling for a 5.0 rating on aroma alone. The flavor backed it up. Tried to find any reason to back off the score but never came close to finding one. And I'm not a barley wine lover, so go figure.
Congratulations Ryan on a fabulous milestone beer. Now go out there and find two more of these before they are all gone.
