So, now that I'm in Texas and being forced to drink a lot of beer, we are going to have one of my favorite breweries, Spoetzel. It's a Brewers Pride barrel-aged doppelbock. They aged to this using a Texas Garrison Brothers bourbon barrel. Special stuff.
Thankfully, this one has plenty of effervescence and head. Some other reviewers have had an issue with this. Aroma has a wine characteristic, I smell grapes. First sip gives very little effervescence. A strong prune and port wine. Alcohol is also in the forefront. Soft, very subdued gentleness to the flavor, well balanced. Has an elegant and sophisticated characteristic. Smooth, semi-sweet wine flavor transfers easily into the finish. Very few beers deserve the characteristic "classy" but this one does.
