Sunsmasher 5.8%, Holy Goat Brewing, Scotland

Sunsmasher
5.8% Sour / Wild Ale
Sunsmasher is a golden sour beer fermented with Brettanomyces and aged on 250g/l Apricots. Blended from three different batches of base beer, all of which were brewed with local barley, wheat and oats. Of the three batches, two were completely unhopped providing deep citrus/peach acidity and subtle funk, whilst the third batch was lightly hopped, producing more intense tropical funk with a restrained acidity. The resulting blend holds a good balance of these characteristics producing juicy tropical, stone fruit and citrus characters which complements the hefty addition of apricot. Size: 375ml ABV: 5.8% Allergens: Barley, Wheat, Oats Vegan Friendly

Tämä on Sunsmasher, ei Sunslayer, kuten viivakoodi ehdottaa. Oranssia runsaasti vaahtoavaa mehun näköistä nestettä. Kuvassa vaahto oli jo laskeutunut. Suutuntuma on paksun mehumainen. Maussa aavistus maltaita, ohraa, vehnää ja kauraa. Pääosassa on kuitenkin pehmeän kirpeä aprikoosinen, sitruksinen ja persikkainen mehu. Loppu kirpeämmän hiivainen ja kuivahko.

Not to be confused with Sunslayer (as I did whilst looking to rate this) the 7.2% brew, this is a more smashable version at 5.8% ABV. It's a light and refreshing, juicy and pleasantly sour affair. There is loads of apricot and goes very well with the citrusy stone fruity flavours of unabashed golden sour base. As they describe this brew, it has basically no hops which means the affore mention fruit flavours come solely from the sour brew of barley, wheat and oats. I've had a basic golden sour from them a couple of times, like the Ukrainian relief brew, but this one is definitely a step up with its apricot infusion. It's more rounded and much more flavourful with depth and balance. Whilst not complex, it's nice to drink and morish, interesting enough to draw you back. Those basic golden sours are quality but holy goats always shine when there's more going on. This one's not a deep, complex, high ABV banger that leads one to stroke ones beard. It's more sip and go 'mmm, nice' and go back for a bigger gulp. It's summer in winter. Soft and not obnoxiously sour, in fact it's getting easier to down with every passing moment. Shame it's £7, four of these would be a good session. Still, it's Holy Goat's artisan quality and attention to detail that you get and pay for. Beautiful but not outstanding. Recommend for the squeamish/sour new comers.
