Breezed 5.5%, Polly's Brew Co., Wales

Breezed
5.5% Pale Ale - New England
Okay, so we’ve brought Strata to the Polly’s party in its own single hop showcase, and we’re familiar with the little eccentricities of this varietal on its own at this point. It’s only now though when the real fun begins for our brewers – pairing everyone’s new favourite hype hop up with other hops to create full on flavour explosions. Wanting to give recognition to one of the varietals that has acted as the lifeblood that has carried us through our entire existence, it only felt natural to introduce Strata to Citra and create Breezed. Maintaining the DDH Pale style we find the intensity of these two varietals warrant, this beer is a certified hop bomb of high juice and low bitterness; with zesty citrus notes, tropical fruits, along with that distinctive dank weed flavour and aroma profile that makes Strata so unique. Amazing.

Lovely beer. Very dry and grapefruity. Fairly bitter, probably not to everyone's taste, but I really liked it.

Opaque pale appearance, it looks like pineapple juice, with no head retention. Heady citrus and tropical fruit smell consistent with Citra hops. Grapefruit, lime, passionfruit and watermelon aromas can be drawn thanks to the partnering Strata hops. Strata, formally known as X-331 (no, really!) is said to be weed like. Whereas some lagers can smell of weed like Beck's or summut, Strata does it via a dankness in the beer and the hops flavour. Hops are a close relative of weed anyway, particularly when it comes oils, hence dank! HBC 394 aka Citra provides deeper fruit taste and a bigger range of flavours crossing over with Strata on shared passionfruit and melon contributions. Light texture and light to medium body, soft, juicy and not overly sharp. The body and finish go hand in hand, going from juice to hop and projecting out on a level. There's no abrupt end and no spike in the middle, though the dankness does develop into a lasting resinous hoppiness, adding another layer on your tongue after every sip. 5.5% alcohol and soft but with hefty flavour preventing you knocking back half a pint in quick fashion. It has as much flavour as some DIPAs and being more drinkable means you could have another beer or two after without putting yourself at risk of embarrassment! Polly's have done it again, consistent quality, high hops, beautiful beer. Honestly this is right there with Deya's 'Saturated in Citra', it could be it's baby brother. Though really that's probably not a fair comparison...a single hop DIPA and twin hop pale. I'm impressed and from what I hear, the best is yet to come (from my box full).
