I’ve sat on this for over 4 years without realising what it was. The first ship made me realise it was unusual, a hybrid of styles. Definitely a stout but also something else that I thought was a Barleywine, due to the bitterness. Reading up, it’s an Imperial Stout/Quadrupel hybrid.
It’s really good!
There’s the roast malt character as I expected, some chocolate, some roast malt astringency. It’s nice and oily, full in the mouth. But then it’s drying in the finish, and comes with stewed fruits and burnt sugar notes. I’m assuming Belgian yeast strain is in here too given the spicyness that’s evident.
Really complex, but mellow and easy drinking.
