Named after Robinsons' brewery cat, Old Tom is almost as old as the brewery itself. It is recognised, both nationally and internationally, as one of the most famous strong ales, winning some of the industry’s most prestigious awards including World’s Best Ale.
Old Tom is dark, rich and warming with a cherry brandy like colour and character. This strong ale has a booming balance of ripe malt, and peppery hops combined with roasted nut and chocolate flavours with a smoky richness. A distinctive deep port wine finish with bitter hops balance complemented by heady, vinous aromas of dark fruit.

This is my first “Old Tom” and I didn’t know what to expect. For one, it’s incredibly strong at 8.5%, but the taste was somehow familiar. I eventually placed it as a similar taste to German Malz, or more specifically Karamalz. It has a sweet malty flavour and a hint of yeasty bread. There’s a slight tickle on the tongue from the carbonisation which lifts the heaviness slightly. It’s certainly a pleasant tasting ale, if you like malt. I honestly think it is a little deceiving as after a few sips, you forget this is a strong ale and could easily end up drinking one or two more.

Agréablement surpris. Grosse explosion de saveurs dès la 1ere gorgée, bien prononcées. Si l'on veut être tatillon un peu trop "chocolaté" pour moi.

Has a Port like aroma and tastes of rich black cherries with a liquorish sweet black molasses finish. Really warming just right for a winter’s evening.
