Born a double-mashed imperial brown ale, then matured for 18 months in freshly emptied 10-year Canadian rye whisky barrels, this sturdy ale features checkered notes of rich vanilla, charred oak, warming whisky and spicy rye. With a lingering, boozy sweetness and round, resonant flavor, Plaid Habit clearly earns its name.

Ryan and I are Duoing this Plaid Habit 2024 edition. At 11.9%, it's less strong than the 13.9% that was rated previously. Very little head that quickly disappeared. Almost opaque color. Aroma is really sweet, prunes or maybe raisin, and just a breath of whiskey. First sip is velvetly soft, creamy, and extremely sweet. Now I like dessert stouts, which means I like sweet beers, but this is almost too sweet. I get the dark fruit which is mostly like dried prune. The abundance of sweetness is difficult to pinpoint but Ryan and I both feel like molasses is as close as we can get. After that, nothing. I get all this flavor in the first two seconds and that's it. No roastiness, no bitterness, no other flavors to balance all that sweetness. Don't really taste the Canadian whiskey until very late in the finish and that's mainly when it travels up the nostril. 15 seconds after the sip, it's all gone. Like eating cotton candy. I love Boulevard, it's on my bucket list. Maybe expectations were too high but this was a disappointment. Not balanced, too sweet, even for me, and nothing for the pallet besides a blast of sugar. Good flavor but it's unfulfilling.

Whiskey in the aroma. Taste has huge whiskey along with a sweetness I can't quite put my finger on. Oak from the barrel aging is present. I think the sweetness is brown sugar. Medium-full body with an appropriately lower carbonation. Quite boozy, but that's kind of expected at 13.9% abv. I like this one a lot, but I don't love it. Glad I tried it. 3.75/5
