40 Ft. Brewery
England
chevron_leftchevron_right
Ben Ott grew up in Cologne, so it’s no surprise that his first beer at 40ft was a Kolsch, and a very good one at that. Made using Golden Promise, one of the finest English malts, Larger (not a typo!) is a clean, superbly drinkable pale beer with just enough prickly hop bitterness. Ott, once head brewer at Truman’s, works out of three shipping containers in a Dalston yard, a situation that belies his talent and depth of brewing knowledge. He wears a flat cap, a sartorial decision that can be at least partially explained by his half-Scouse heritage; his mum’s side of the family comes from Aigburth.

Easy going pour with a little more than usual foam, atop a body of yellow, carrying a slight orange hue with it's deep haze.
Scent of overripe mango, with bitter grapefruit and a little indisticnt citrus.
Moutheel is foamy, a little too foamy. There is not much else here in terms of carbonation and the light body feels a little flat. Without anything to contrast, the foam seems over bearing and the rest of the body seems washed out.
Taste is a little full too, the mango is faint, suppressed under malt, with the grapefruit coming more to the fore. Thankfully there was some sweetness in the lemon based citrus that balanced better with the grapefruit.
Not the best but would happily try it again.
