In the 1870's the bottom fermented beers had swept Europe and the bustling workingclass city of Dortmund developed its own adaption of the Pilsner style. The Dortmund style is slightly darker than pilsner, a burnished honey gold, edging toward amber. It steers away from the bold hop bitterness and aroma of Pilsner, preferring a firm maltiness, a full-bodied, slightly sweet palate; and a clean, dry finish. Dortmunder's strength at 5.5-6% resembling the Marzen's. This beer style has been nearly lost in history as World War II was very hard on Dortmund.
