Peach & Apricot Pastel De Nata, Scotland
4.2

Peach & Apricot Pastel De Nata, Scotland
4.6
Two quick ones @ Pien. Both are pastel de nata inspired peach & apricot pastry sours. The first one is a regular version, the second one is an imperial version. Both look dark rusty, almost brown, impenetrable, for sure. Weak carbonation in both. And a truly subdued lace ring on the top. Beer #1 gives an awesome scent: apricot jam, peach jam, biscuit, sweet shortcrust pastry, vanilla, as if faint cardamom. Very pastry-like! Beer #2 puts forward a surprisingly juicy fragrance: I can spot apricot, a bit of biscuit and distant sweet shortcrust pastry. Much less pastry-like! Beer #1 sips beautifully with apricot pulp, canned peach slices, nectarine, biscuit, a hint of cereal, vanilla and wheat malt. Still, this delivers although the generous olfactory punch doesn't carry over to the tastebuds in full. Beer #2 tastes intense apricot pulp, bowls of peach juice, ripe of course, canned peach, too. The malty or biscuity or cerealy elements are marginal only, for which reason any pastry-like impression remains negligible. Beer #1 clocks light-medium to medium. The finish is more juicy and pulpy than pastry-like. The mouthfeel is medium, deep, a tad thick, pulpy, tropical and distantly spiced. Surprisingly, not really lip-glueing. Anyway, this gives a nice pastel de nata impression, especially in the air. Beer #2 leaves a medium-full to full sensation in the mouth. The mouthfeel is also juicy, pulpy, ripe and tropical. Not really pastry-like. Flavorful, yes, but can't beat the regular edition.
