“800 IBU. F***, let's go!”
That's the marketing slogan of this beer. 800 IBUs sounds astronomical. The highest IBU figure I've tasted must be above 100 but probably below 200. And that's bitter!
Therefore, I had to ask AI about the IBU measure if it's linear or not.
And this is the fun fact of today:
”International Bitterness Units (IBUs) scale linearly in a chemical sense, but they do not feel linear to human taste buds.
Chemical Scale vs. Human Taste
In the lab: One IBU equals one milligram of dissolved iso-alpha acids per liter of beer. Doubling the concentration from 20 to 40 IBUs means you have literally doubled the amount of bitter chemical compounds.
On the tongue: Human perception of taste is logarithmic, not linear. A beer with 80 IBUs does not taste twice as bitter as a beer with 40 IBUs.
The sensory limit: The human palate generally stops being able to distinguish differences in bitterness past roughly 100 IBUs, even though chemical measurements can keep climbing past that number.”
Hence, one can expect a bitter punch here but not anything out of this world though.
The beer looks semiclear amber. As if zillions of minuscule particles floated in the beer. It doesn't look like carbondioxide. I guess it's from the hops. The carbonation is reasonable. I can observe a soapy off-white head that exceeds two fingers and descends eventually to a neat lace ring and haze on the surface.
Pine, resin, malt and grass find my nose first. Fruity elements are rare to depict but grapefruit can be added to the list if any.
The taste is damn bitter! Oh! Yes! Pine and resin dominate. No wonder! Pine and resin. Resin and pine. Anything else? Yes: malt. Like graham cracker. Grapefruit peel and pith, grass and a bit of dried apricot can also be found. A dry-hop slam, for sure.
The body is full. Nice! The end is interesting: identical to upfront componentwise but lingers awkwardly long on my tongue.
The impression is full, supercrisp, dry and drying. Don't expect anything else! It's a bit heavy, medium-thick and traditional. This is the way WCIPAs used to be. No mercy. Not for picky drinkers. 🚨

Ibudrama 800. Eli international bitterness unit on 800.
