This is probably my last beer in Kyiv for now. It's time to start my journey back home. First, a long bus drive to Warsaw, then a short flight to Helsinki.
Kyiv and Ukraine have been an interesting experience. Were the circumstances different, this would be a lovely touristic destination. It's a nice city, nice people, good food, good beer. Crime is less than in many places in Europe, so it's relatively safe in the streets.
But. The country is at war. At war that started from one leader's paranoic and seriously distorted worldview. Of course, the people in Kyiv are in a completely different situation than the people in the east, closer to the frontline. But even in Kyiv, one can experience a bit of the war.
The most annoying things are the air raid alerts. We have had alerts every night. From one alert to several. Lasting from 15 minutes to eight hours like last night. The weapons are mostly Shahed drones, made in Iran. The air defence shoots most of them down but a few of them also manage to get thru to the city every now and then. Last night, one drone hit a residential building in Holosiivskyi district, a Kyiv suburb. It's 8–15 km from my location, depending on the exact location of the raid. Drone debris fell also in several other districts of Kyiv, approximately in a similar distance. Actually, some of them flew over the very central district of Kyiv. I didn't hear anything here, like explosions, but it's a bit too close to my comfort zone.
These air raids may be "just air raids" or maybe a test for something bigger. Russia is constantly looking for new routes for drones but also for more destructive missiles. Russia also tries to locate the air defence system and disperse it to many places for less effectiveness.
So, it's time to go home. Before that, a quick review of one more 🇺🇦 beer.
Murky, dark brown beer with a reasonably impressive, latte-hued carbonation. Dark bread, molasses, a bit of syrup and dark chocolate can be found in the scent. Pretty closely the same gustatory universe prevails on the tastebuds. Actually quite nice but would benefit from a meal to accompany with. The mouthfeel is medium-full (applaudable at 4.2 % only), frothy, savory, soft, smooth and balanced. A nice piece!
