Quality time. Sitting by the lake in the middle of the warm night, fog is rising abundantly from the water. Northern lights and shooting stars in the sky. Everything looks magical. Is this real? And my treat. Yes, my third souvenir from D.C. Very high expectations! I don't need a light to know what this beer looks like: opaque, pitch black. What else? The carbonation is shy. A subdued chocolate tan head forms on the surface, failing to reach even half a finger. Soon a mere hair-thin lace ring is all I can observe on the top, the rest of the foamy decoration is history. The nose is about to fall in nirvana: powerful dark chocolate, molten, like ganache. Almond, hazelnut, vanilla, a bit of harsh sweet rye porridge. Bourbon is vanilla-dominant. And caramel, brown sugar and maple syrup. Whoaah! These guys master the application of adjuncts. The taste profile appeals to my sweet tooth big time! Pretty familiar, based on the olfactory experience just a while ago. Dark chocolate with bags of cacao nibs, of course. Not like pieces of chocolate but molten. Vanilla and Bourbon. Bourbon and vanilla. Bourbon is actually even bolder here on the tastebuds than in the air. Oak barrel notes. Lovely. Dark but not dark fruits. Instead, I can spot a faint hint of apricot jam. Whaaat?? Is this Sachertart or what? Damn. Show must go on. Maple syrup, hazelnut, even a tweak of sugared almonds can be detected. Date? Hmmm, maybe. Deep flavors, a true treat. The body is full. Nothing less but full. The finish is identical to upfront. Chocolate, vanilla, everything repeated. And why not? It's an intriguing cocktail. The end takes its time but the time is not too long. The mouthfeel is really full, intense, deep, velvety, smooth, and – of course – desserty. It's nicely warming and barrel aged. Like black oil. Not particularly complex, nor one-sided either. Adjuncts give big flavors, it comes at no surprise to me. Yet, I loved the two earlier big OH beers even better than this, they both contained banana which, I think, fitted there beautifully.
