I bought a couple of nightcaps at The Drinks of the World at the railway station earlier today. Just to make sure that there's at least one of two tasty beers for tonight. The first one is a Fruited Sour Ale with kiwis. Kiwi beers don't come across to my path too often. And yet, I've learned to know the brewery, À Tue-Tête, as a high quality brewery especially what comes to aged Sour Ales. This beer is 2021 vintage.
The color is rather cloudy, deep orange, like mandarin juice. Carbonation is fast, a mere half-a-finger lacing visits the surface and then waves for goodbye.
Dry white wine and lactic acid dominate the olfactory package. Sour versions of mandarin and orange can also be identified. Perhaps a suggestion of peach, too. I can't recognize kiwifruit in the scent, it's a difficult fruit to find in the first place.
Let me see what I spot in the gustatory sphere then. Sour mandarin is obvious. So is sour orange zest. Lemon zest and green grape are also lofty. Faint peach follows in the distance. Lactic acid, white wine but no, kiwifruit is unrecognizable here. Like I said, kiwifruit is difficult in beer, the flavor intensity is fairly low and it tends to get confused with other, more familiar fruits.
The body is light-medium. The finish is significantly citrusy and peachy. Acidic punch gives no mercy. The end lingers long on the taste receptors.
The mouthfeel is light-medium, really tart, puckering, acidic and vinous. It's also dry, drying and zesty. A bit sharp despite the age. Not as mind-blowing as some other Sour Ales by the brewery. Kiwi isn't obviously an easy nut to crack for À Tue-Tête either.
