Ancient Dark Brew (2019)
12.0% Sour / Wild Ale
Amphoras were the first vessel used by humans to make beer. Recent studies suggest that the result was a mixed fermentation wild ale that got sour while aging. We brewed a huge 35+ Plato Imperial Stout full of crazy amounts of roasted malts. Aging in clay allows for far more oxygen penetration than oak barrels which mellows the harsh rostiness into beautiful coffee and chocolate notes and the diverse microflora of the clay add a delicate tartness to the beer with some dark fruit notes. Color is black with nice viscosity and a tiny brown head that dissipates. Aroma is warm, sweet dark malts, molasses, dark bread crust with some mushroomy earthy notes. Taste is light sweet, warming and light to medium lactic tartness with intense roasty coffee and chocolate and some dark fruit notes. Tartness goes all the way to the aftertaste with light yeasty fruit notes and tiny bit of salinity. Body is medium to full.

My choice 🤪 Amphora aged mixed fermentation wild ale. Wax capped. Vintage 2019. Sounds perrrverted! Yes!! Muddy, oily jet black beer. Basically no carbonation. A very restrained lacing, the color is beautiful bronze tan. The nose enjoys dark chocolate, purple grape, red wine, a suggestion of coffee beans, damson, lingonberry and a dash of rowanberry. Rich. Astonishingly soft. My tastebuds are eagerly waiting for their turn. It's now. Really soft and smooth indeed. Purple grape, dark plum, also peel, mature red wine, a whisper of raw cacao bean, lingonberry, dark malt and wheat. Not sure if I can spot amphora but maybe it's the absence of barrel notes that matters. The mouthfeel is medium. Vinous big time, slightly funky, velvety and smooth. Round and mature. Puckering and moderately tart. Tannic, as well. Rich, deep and multifaceted. This delivers! Unique! Beautifully aged. But... plastic cups at a reputable beer spot. Gosh... 🤦🏼‍♂️

OLUT: Amphorae Aged Ancient Dark Brew PANIMO: Kykao OLUTTYYPPI: Sour (Amphora Aged) MAA: Kreikka VAHVUUS (ABV): 12.0% VÄRI (EBC): Tummansyvänpunaisenmusta (70.0) KATKEROT (EBU/IBU): - TUOKSU: Punamarjainen ja hieman villi. Erinomaisen mielenkiintoinen. Aromissa myös tuollaista santapohjaa, ehkä jopa sitä keraamisuutta. Puolirunsaan punaviinimäinen. VAAHTO: Olematon. GREY’S VIEW Imperial Stout pohja kypsyteltynä Kreikkalaisissa Amphora vaaseissa. (Sour tyyli on panimon ilmoittama). Erinomaisesti odotukseen sopiva. MUUTA MAINITTAVAA: Amphora = Keraaminen Vaasi, mikä palveli ihmisiä n.10 000v. ekr. - 600v. jkr. Hieno kunnianosoitus itseä kiinnostavalle ajanjaksolle. Toki itse sinne Rooman valtakauden suuntaan kallistuen. Merkittävän oloinen teos kaikkinensa; hidas, samean pehmeän punamarjainen, punaviinimäinen. Upea. Arvostettava teos.
