Barrel & Bean starts its life as our Tripel—a Belgian-style golden ale. We age that beer in bourbon barrels for just shy of two months, before blending it with cold-brewed coffee from Speckled Ax, a Maine coffee roaster. The sun-dried Ethiopian beans in the coffee are known for their stone fruit and dark berry flavors. The finished beer features rich notes of caramel, bourbon, and coffee.

It’s difficult not to fall in love with this beer even though the base beer isn’t a style I tend to like. In true American craft beer fashion a brewery has come along and taken a traditional European style beer and made it better than it ever could be. Not resting on their laurels they then age it in bourbon barrels and cut it with cold brew Ethiopian coffee.
Mega!
So smooth and drinkable. So moorish and flavoursome. Full bodied, caramel, vanilla, banana and cloves and then intense rich coffee. The flavours do not match the colour which makes the mind boggle and that’s half the fun!
