Day #6 of Advent Calendar. Red wine barrel aged Quadrupel with dates and fig syrup sounds like a punch!
The beer colors dark red-brown like Earl Grey tea. Suppressed carbonation creates a modest, latte-hued head that falls short of half a finger's measure. Soon the surface is flat still.
Date, caramel and syrup form the scent. Chocolate drycake, cookie and a pinch of caramel accompany the dry-fruity combination attractively.
The taste is controversial in that it's really thin but also powerful and intense. I pick oversweet malt, caramel, copious date, dried fig, syrup and a small dollop of fruity Sherry. This beer has been aged in red wine barrels, and indeed, it takes time for the red wine to pop up in the mouth.
The body is medium to medium-full. The finish gives modestly more alcohol but still well at a manageable level. Otherwise, it's relatively sweet, dry-fruity and mellow. The aftertaste gets stuck to the glass for a long time.
The mouthfeel is intense, mellow, remotely alcoholic and reasonably barrel aged. It's sappy and somewhat sticky. However, I anticipated a bit more.
