Roast My Brew!! That Sludge Looks Like Sh**!, Finland
3.2
Time to check out our last unreviewed homebrew. This is of the same Roasted Stout family as the two samples I tasted four days ago (regular and oak chip versions). This beer has been flavored with mämmi — the Finnish Easter delicacy made of sweetened rye malt. The amount of mämmi was not modest and it contains a lot of fermentable sugars, hence, the ABV clocks also somewhat higher than the two other ones. The beer pours opaque, matte black. The hue is not as deep black as that of the other beers but hangs somewhere between black and very deep dark brown. I'd still rather classify this black than anything related to brown. Carbonation is tame. It still produces a cute tawny, airy head that reaches one finger easily. Retention is not long but it's not hasty either. Nevertheless, the surface is soon flat still. The scent is considerably subdued but I still manage to identify dark malt and a roasted hint. They both are truly remote. The olfactory provision was quite weak also in the other two Stouts but provided additionally licorice. This one doesn't. The taste offers distinct sweet rye malt, dried plum, brown sugar and faint raisin. The elements of mämmi can, therefore, be found. I can also pick licorice and a moderate twist of roasted coffee beans. Interestingly, the mämmi has wiped out blackcurrant leaf and anything that reminds me of hops from the palate. The body is... light. I wouldn't say that this is anything bigger than that. It's light. Period. It seems that the extra fermentable sugars in the form of mämmi have turned into alcohol, simultaneously tweaked the gustatory package, but unfortunately gnawed slightly the body. It's substandard for 6.8 %. The finish serves a tad roasted rye malt, even with a faintly burned tang, licorice and — for the first time — a hoppy idea. A restrained alcoholic amendment comes in the picture, as well. The sweetness that coats the mouth vanishes in the finish. As if the basic bed of the original Roasted Stout remained but all the frills were removed. The aftertaste buys Finnish mämmi, opens the basket and can't believe its eyes for quite some time. The mouthfeel is relatively light, a bit roasty, lip-glueing and still faintly drying. Later, tangy and alcoholic elements raise timidly their head. Conclusion: well, well... On a positive note, I'm glad that some key flavors of the mämmi are also detectable in the beer. The general impression is not bad but I hoped for better. On a critical note, the body lags behind my standards. The alcoholic touch is also unwelcome at this ABV. I don't find this that successful that would justify a second batch. One experimentation is enough.
