Hopped Ephah of Barley, Bath of Wine, Finland
3.5
The hopped edition colors, of course, exactly the same: foggy, deep dark brown. As if carbonation were slightly more robust, at least the emerging head rises a bit taller, almost one finger and adorns the top as a cute lace ring for significantly long. The fragrance is a bit thinner than the standard version's. I can pick dark malt whose sweetness is considerably less prominent. Again, molasses and brown sugar are evident but with less sweet nuances than with the first version. Both date and raisin are depictable but moderate. If I can conclude anything from the differences, the standard edition may pose a sweeter scent than the hopped one. The taste profile is a tad sweet but distinctly less so than that of the regular version. Medium-sweet malt with bitter-leaning caramel, bags of fermented raisin, lemon peel and some alcohol can be listed as the key components of the palate. Syrup and brown sugar try to shy away from the show. The hoppy touch is light-grassy and poses even a faint piney character. The combination of sweet malt and crisp hoppiness reminds me of Amber Ales and is not exactly my favorite but, on the other hand, I got what I was looking for. The body is identical: light-medium to medium. The beer ends with bittersweet malt, a good pinch of raisin, bitter syrup and dry-grassy hops. The latter is now more like grapefruit peel than pine. Alcohol is even less prominent here than in the standard edition, or is it that I'm getting used to it? 😅 The aftertaste looks for 'hop use' in the Bible for quite some time but finds nothing; the tastebuds remind it grinningly that the brewers started to use hops only in the 13th century. The mouthfeel is medium-strong, a bit heavy, slightly lip-glueing and reasonably crisp. It's merely distantly alcoholic and a bit raw as well as less warming than earlier. I prefer the standard BW over the hopped version. On the other hand, I'm glad that I got what I anticipated.
