Here lies Old Smokey, once lost but never forgotten. This beer originated in Grodzisk in Poland and is generally referred to as a Gratzer which means, “from Gratz” the German name given to the town. This is a unique style using 100% oak smoked wheat malt, being highly hopped, and ranging between 3-3.5%abv. The style has mentions as early as the 15th Century and really gained popularity in the 18th Century. In 1994 the brewery still producing the Gratzer was purchased by another brewery and soon after closed it’s doors with no other breweries continuing to brew this style of beer.
