Vintage 2020. Hazy, chestnut brown beer with an off-white, bubbleless head that just covers the top and then dissipates to a frazil-icy lace ring circling the surface.
The scent is intriguing and definitely steps out of the crowd: first and foremost, I'm getting copious honeycomb and a good bit of peppermint. Then a second layer opens up with licorice root and a herbal nuance like ground ivy. Finally, spruce needles and a drop of resin contribute their modest aromas to the last layer.
The taste continues off the beaten track. Nice! Now the herbal universe takes the lead, especially with springly spruce tops, a pinch of mint, maybe also remote peppermint, ground ivy again, as well as faint vanilla. Certainly a small injection of licorice, as well. Alcohol is there and doesn't want to make it easy for the taste receptors. Honey or honeycomb is equally recognizeable as it reaches the sides of the tongue. Nice indeed. Nothing really to compare with but still quite gluggable.
The body clocks medium to medium-full. Not more than that. The finish continues on the herbal path. Mint, peppermint, spruce needles and a distinct note of honey alternate up and down on the tongue. Licorice intensifies to some extent but fades soon behind the general herbal sensation. The aftertaste heads in one direction but gets rapidly lost as the tastebuds all point to different directions over a pretty long time.
The mouthfeel is -- did I say this already? -- herbal. It's also a bit lip-glueing, relatively intense, boozy and, consequently, moderately warming. Very interesting, intriguing and surely unique, offers also layers and unpredictability. I like the boldness and the fact that this brew wants to break free from the average sphere of experience.
