Ouch... I Cracked My Nuts!, Finland
3.7
Saturday starts with a homebrew: nut brown ale. This was brewed on 18 August and bottled 15 September. Now tasting. The beer pours bright, very dark brown, almost black. The rich carbonation releases a porous, cappuccino-colored head that hits the mark of three fingers. The retention is long. The withdrawing froth messes the glass with thick lacings all over where the head has been in contact with. The nose receives moderate dark malt, a small bit of toasted brown bread and a roasty wisp. Quite one-dimensional and won't let you enjoy strong aromas. The taste is considerably heftier. I'm getting dark chocolate, raw cacao powder and a hint of licorice, accompanied by toasted dark bread and a faint coffeeish note. I can additionally find bitter molasses in small proportion. The nutty element that I expected to be braver is actually significantly shy. Overall nice, yet surely not spectacular but clean and balanced. Easily approachable. The body is light-medium to medium. I would conclude that it meets the minimum standard of 7.5 %. The beer finishes with a tad more bitter-gearing components of raw chocolate, raw cacao powder, rye malt and a suggestion of rye bread. Proposals of molasses, licorice root and hops enter the scene discreetly. The nutty touch is as subtle as upfront or even lighter. The aftertaste cracks nuts with the tastebuds over medium duration. The mouthfeel is gentle, attractively soft and smooth. It's also "light-full", clean and balanced as well as old-school. Since most of our beers are flavored one way or another, it's also good to have something ungimmicky once in a while.
