Mango Vitamin, Finland
3.7
The second homebrewed Fruited Sour Ale. Now with mango. The beer colors fully impenetrable, deep orange, like apricot nectar. Not sure how the moderate dark hue that should originate from the rye of the Sahti malt has calibrated this beer's color but this certainly looks appealing to me. Carbonation is surprisingly loud as I uncap the bottle but the emerging head is substantially impotent. A white thin lace ring merely appears on the top and dies away in ten seconds. Thereafter the drink is flat still. A pinch of fruit particles find their way to the bottom of the glass. It's mango puree that escaped from the hop sock in the secondary fermentation. Just have to remember to turn the bottle upsidedown a couple of times before opening. The scent is extremely straighforward and one-dimensional: it's mango. Only. Quite hefty mango. The sourness of the fragrance is limited but recognizeable. The taste profile is reasonably sour with powerful mango pulp. The same challenge as with "Strawberry Vitamin" encountered us here that we couldn't push the pH lower than 4.4. Our target was 3.5, or at least 4.0. Anyway, I'm not sure if this has still developed a bit in the bottle as this tastes slightly more sour than the strawberry rhubarb version. Lactic acid is clearly depictable. The fruity mango is truly dominant but I'm imagining also a drop of orange juice and passionfruit among the gustatory components. The body feels like light-medium. It's obviously a result of the fruit adjunct rather than the malt. The finish pushes forward an attractive punch of mango pulp, identifiable lactic acid and, interestingly, a tad passionfruit. I can also find whispers of bitter orange peel and lemon zest. The aftertaste picks mangoes for the tastebuds over medium duration. The mouthfeel is juicy, pulpy and nectar-like as well as absolutely sunny tropical. It's medium-tart but only subtly puckering as well as flat. Overall, neatly summery and quaffable. I find this a rather tasty Fruited Sour Ale, especially for our first ever Sour Ale batch. What is still needed is more sourness and stronger carbonation but the level of fruitiness is nice. Notwithstanding, of course I will have to experiment one day also double fruit punch. More will be more anyway.
