Interesting times we live. I don't refer this time to covid-19 but the beer: this beer is our first "real" beer that we have brewed alongside several batches of Sahti. This is actually our second beer but the first one was just the second runnings of the Sahti wort with no additional tuning or boosts.
Now, this Imperial Stout was brewed on 18 June, that is almost three months ago. The ABV clocked 10.9 % at the time of bottling. So, let's start the engine.
The beer colors fully opaque, pitch black. It shakes in the glass very fluidly. The carbonation seems to be extraordinarily shy, hence, a mere faint chain of fawn bubbles circles the top and dies quickly away.
The scent is, generally speaking, not particularly powerful. Sweet licorice is dominant but still medium-strong at maximum. Moreover, I can find a bit of molasses, brown sugar and a distant idea of vanilla. Just to make things clear, there's no vanilla in the beer.
The taste profile is promising. I get intensive sweet licorice and a warming boozy punch. It's like cough syrup that lacks sticky thickness. Moderate molasses enters the scene from behind the corner and meets the distant friend of delicate vanilla. It's all quaffable but quite simple.
The body is light-medium. It surely should be more robust at 10.9 %. The beer finishes with the same sweet licorice, a syrupy hint, a small injection of molasses and vanilla. The boozy component can be recognized but it's actually rather pleasant on the sides of the tongue. The aftertaste rolls on tongue over medium duration.
The mouthfeel is relatively flat, semi-intensive, medicinal and slightly lip-glueing. It's also simple, not necessarily predictable, but surely not complex. Furthermore, the mouthfeel is a little boozy and nicely throat-warming.
Decent but not a winner. I'll do a re-tasting later this year to assess the development. I'll be back.
