Now it's a perfect time to taste our first ever own Sahti. We learned from the local Sahti Master last summer and documented every detail with pictures. With the help of those guidelines and some newly acquired equipment, we started our own brewing. What an awesome winner feeling! 🏆 Our first born. So beautiful. 🤎 I already reviewed two weeks ago the small beer that was produced of the second running of this very Sahti wort. It was nothing to remember. It's no surprise as we used no additional malts nor flavors to boost it. Now the Sahti itself. It pours quite foggy, medium-brown with a red tint. Only a restrained broken ring of tiny bubbles emerges on the side of the top. The nose enjoys massive sweet malt, accompanied by fairly powerful banana, much more distant honeydew melon, dried apricot, raisin and sweet biscuit. Oh mama, this is it! Attractive! The tongue receives relatively powerful nuances of rather sweet malt that portrays fermented banana and sweet biscuit. Rye malt brings in additional, a bit harsh sweetness to the gustatory profile. Moreover, a silent sigh of raisin lingers somewhere in the distance. Alcohol is well hidden but can be felt slightly warming in the throat. The body is medium-full. The beer ends with fermented sweet malt and strong fermented banana, accompanied by a bit of raisin, a suggestion of dried apricot and biscuit. The alcoholic twist can't be tasted but rather felt as a very subtle warming feeling down the throat. The aftertaste dances "tanhu", Finnish folk dance, with the reluctant tastebuds for quite a long time. The mouthfeel is medium-full, a tad sticky, even slightly sappy and lip-glueing. It's also very traditional, uncarbonated and nicely satiating as the beerstyle always goes. Very good stuff for our first ever Sahti. 🤎 The taste is more or less identical to what I used to experience with the local Sahti Master's brews. It's self-evident since we followed his example religiously. For now. It's embarassing to rate our own brew this high but I can't help it. This is my 40th Sahti in Pint Please and unfortunately quite few commercial Sahtis reach this level. Well, the tastes are different of course. This is our maiden voyage. The beginning of a new era. More will follow. Very soon.
