Amber brown color with an extremely long-lasting tan head. The texture looks quite thick. Nice: 4,75/5
Aromas of bread (loaf), dried fruits, and licorice with a whisky aging provided smoke, peat, and salty ham-like aromas. Barrel aging supports the beer aromas very nicely without dominating them. Good harmony. Although this should be American Barleywine, and there are virtually no hops at all despite a citrus aroma that gets through when this warms up more. Nevertheless, a complex and well build: 4,25/5
Mouthfeel is medium-full, round, oaky, bitter, lively carbonation is just a touch too sparkling: 4/5
Taste charges with a heavy malty punch with a definite smokey and peaty whisky flavors. Then herbal notes and dried fruit. And after them a lingering oaky and smoke flavor. The second sip makes the oak softer. At the very end some citrusy vibe from the hops. I'd like much more hoppy aromas in here. Now, this seems more like an English style Barleywine with all that maltiness. The whisky aging supports those malty flavors nicely. Perhaps the barrel aging is part of the reason why hops aren't really tasting?. The aftertaste is bitter, a touch of grassy and long: 12/15
Overall a solid, 1-year-old Barleywine. Full of flavors and pretty good complexity. Frontaal is really good with this beer style. This is my 3rd BW from this brewery. Good quality. Nothing really special, though the barrel aging is on point as it supports the other flavors nicely (but perhaps covers the hops flavors too much🤷♂️). A pleasure to enjoy these! 16,25/20
