LINCOLN’S GIFT OYSTER STOUT
Union General William Tecumseh Sherman torched most of the Confederate South on his 1864 March to the Sea, but his swath of destruction met its end when he came upon the lovely city of Savannah, GA. Overcome by its beauty and bounty, tough old Sherman presented an unscathed Savannah to President Abraham Lincoln as a Christmas gift.
Service Brewing Co. honors the 16th president of these United States with a beer based on one of Lincoln’s other favorite gifts—the kind that come from the sea. Lincoln’s Gift is a sweet stout brewed with locally harvested May River oysters, giving this traditional dark beer a slightly briny character.

Ryan's diet is killing my beer enthusiasm. No one to have beers with has slowed me down.
This oyster Stout starts with a very thick and frothy head that is lasting. Aroma has a sweet nutty characteristic along with some light malt. Texture has a modest amount of softness, very smooth to drink. The flavor reveals a deep sweet malt roast. Appears to be a slightly burnt molasses. There's also notes of either leather or tobacco in the background. Just before the finish, an unusual flavor appears on the back of the tongue. It's obviously the oyster shells giving it a salty brine sharpness that continues through the finish. During the finish a hop bitterness joins in.
I enjoyed this beer with this unusual flavor. Would not go out of my way to have another but definitely enjoyed this one.

On tap at The Foundry. My first oyster stout. Poured by tapmaster on glass side, so little head. A clear but very dark brown color. Strange aroma. Taste is smooth, slightly creamy. Coffee and chocolate, a little salty from the oysters. Finish is a bitter sweet chocolate. Stays awhile. Very good.
