3.9
My Advent Calendar opens door #16. It offers "Pump[KY]n" by Avery Brewing Co. in Colorado. The label says that this is Annual Barrel Series Batch № 3.
I also pay attention to the ABV. It seems to be massive 18.8 %... That gives me a strong prejudice even before I have taken a single sip. 😬
The beer looks ugly: very turbid, sludgy dark brown. If a beer looks that unattractive, the only way herefrom is up. The shy, quick carbonation lays only a modest, cream-colored lace ring, no real head emerges on the top. The ring shrinks soon even further.
The scent is abundant: sweet malt, drycake and sweet syrupy biscuit, pots of pumpkin jam and hefty pumpkin candy. Nutmeg and cinnamon are easily identifiable on the spicy side, clove less so. Mellow Bourbon lingers appealingly in the air.
The taste pushes forward oversweet brown malt, a good amount of syrup and some molasses. Pumpkin is massive and takes the form of both pumpkin pie and pumpkin jam. I can also detect a nice subdued injection of dark chocolate. Alcohol can be easily felt but only marginally tasted due to the heavy sweetness. Bourbon is more pronounced. The spicy palette offers again nutmeg and cinnamon, clove steps also to the front seat orgulously. The list of ingredients reveals that the beer contains also allspice but I fail to find it -- perhaps a distant whisper of black pepper looms behind the corner but I most likely confuse clove with it.
The body is full but suffers from distorted impression due to sweetness. The beer ends with oversweet brown malt, a tad dark chocolate cacao nibs and brown biscuit. Pumpkin hasn't disappeared anywhere; it's still hefty, rather in the form of pumpkin pie than pumpkin jam. This time alcohol not only warms but disturbs a little, leaving behind a slightly chemical tang. The spicy collection remains unchanged. The aftertaste keeps the tastebuds shocked over medium duration.
The mouthfeel is very strong, extraordinarily sappy, soft, thick, heavy and lip-glueing. It's also spiced and autumnal, even wintery. The mouthfeel is also a tad alcoholic and slightly tangy chemical towards the finish. Therefore, it's nicely warming and slow. Furthermore, I could describe this rather rich and multidimensional albeit not very complex.
In conclusion, too high an ABV that has required massive sweetness. At 13-14 % this could be perfect.
