Stocking Stuffer is a Wild Stout fermented and aged in French oak spirit barrels. As a sour stout, it's an interesting, unique beer -- certainly my first stout with a notable sour ale twist. This seems to be a 2016 vintage according to the cork. The beer colors semifoggy, deep dark brown. The lively, long-lasting carbonation creates a one-finger, cappuccino-colored, silky head that descends gradually to a frazil-icy lacing wafting on the surface. The retreating foam leaves multiple small erratic splashes on the glass. The scent pushes forward medium-sour blackberry, remote blueberry and faint blackcurrant. I can also pick a coffeeish hint somewhere in the shadows. The taste receptors get confused as the elements seem to obviously mismatch: the Wild Ale components of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and distant blackcurrant are substantially dominant over the Stout element of truly restrained black coffee. A noticeable punch of sherry, remote red wine and a touch of wet oak barrel float all over the gustatory universe. The body is light-medium. The beer finishes with relatively sour blackberry, purple grape, sour cherry and a tad blueberry. Wet sherry and red wine barrels bring in their peculiar unique nuances to the package. The coffeeish whisper disappears in eternity. The aftertaste gives the tastebuds a medium-lasting cryptic challenge to solve. The mouthfeel is a tad light, extraordinarily tart and noticeably puckering. It goes without saying that this is Funky with capital F as well as extremely unique. Furthermore, the mouthfeel is also neatly barrel aged but simultaneously a bit coarse, faintly vinous and somewhat acidic. Still further, it's astringent, rather dry and truly mouth-drying. The beer is categorized as "Stout - Other" in Untappd albeit I find this more like an American Wild Ale than Stout.
